3D Printing Firearms Introduction
created: 10/21/2024 6:23 PM in GEAR

As 3D printing technology advances, it's opening up exciting new possibilities for firearm enthusiasts.

Whether you're looking to customize parts or build a fully 3D-printed firearm from scratch, choosing the right tools and materials is crucial.

In this guide, we'll cover the foundational steps you need to take before embarking on your 3D-printed firearm project starting with the right printer, filament, and design files.

Start by choosing a reliable 3D printer that fits your budget and skill level. Popular options include:

  • Ender 3 V3 KE: An affordable, beginner-friendly printer that offers great performance for the price. At just $240, it's hard to beat for those new to 3D printing.

  • Bambu Lab P1P: While priced higher at $600, the Bambu Lab P1P is worth every penny. Having owned three Creality printers, I can say with confidence that the Bambu Lab P1P stands out in terms of reliability and performance. If you're willing to invest a bit more, it will save you both time and headaches in the long run.

Both of these printers come with a textured PEI sheet, but it's recommended to grab an extra for convenience.

Filament Choices:
Once you’ve chosen your printer, the next step is selecting the filament. Different projects and levels of experience may require different types of materials:

  • Filament: PLA+ is a must. It is easy to print with, offers strength, and is great for those just starting out.

We recommend: eSUN PLA+ & ELEGOO PLA +

Where to Find Files:

Once your printer and tools are ready, the next step is finding files for your project. It’s crucial to source files from reputable places to ensure safety and functionality.

Trusted Sources:
The Gatalog is one of the most reliable platforms for finding tested and trusted files. This community is dedicated to ensuring high-quality designs through extensive beta testing.

Risks of Unvetted Designs:
Steer clear of risky sources like DEFCAD, as their files may contain errors or flaws that could compromise the safety or function of your build.

Don't forget to use a VPN and DuckDuck go Browser

Types of 3D-Printable Firearm Projects

After finding your files, consider the type of project you want to tackle. Firearm builds vary in complexity, from frames to fully 3D-printed guns.

  • Frame or Receiver Projects: In these projects, you’ll print the frame or receiver while purchasing other key parts like the barrel and internal components. This is a great option for customization and a mix of 3D printing and factory parts.

  • Fully Printed Projects: Require very few external parts and offer a fully 3D-printed firearm experience.Fully printed projects like the FGC-9 are popular choices.
