Model 66 History
The S&W Model 66 no-dash is a first production run revolver. The no-dash 66's have a pinned barrel, a hammer mounted firing pin, and the cylinder chambers are cut to recess the .357 magnum cartridge. No box or paperwork.
1970: Model 66 introduced
1974: 2.5" barrel introduced
1977: 66-1 design change. The gas ring was moved from the yoke to the cylinder, reportedly to prevent heat expansion from binging the gun.
1982: 66-2 design change. Delete the barrel pin, delete the recessing of the hammer mounted firing pin.
The major change is that the no-dash model 66 is still pinned and recessed which is and still is a big deal to collectors. The model 66's are more valuable to collectors and people who want a more reliable and basic 66. Quality S&W Model 66's are getting harder to find so you will probably see prices continue to increase in the future.
