SOME MINOR REPAIR ON THE WOOD ON BOTH SIDES OF THE MAGAZINE WHEN IT WAS CONVERTED FROM A VETALTI MAGAZINE STYLE TO THE CARCANO MAGAZINE STYLE.
THE ITALIAN M1870 VETTERLI WAS THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL BOLT-ACTION MILITARY RIFLE USING CENTERFIRE METALLIC CARTRIDGES.
THE MODEL 1870 WAS ORIGINALLY CHAMBERED IN 10.37x47R. CONVERSIONS TO THE VITALI MAGAZINE AND OTHER UPGRADES WERE MADE IN 1887.
QUANTITIES OF THESE ITALIAN LONGARMS WERE ALSO CONVERTED TO 6.5X52MM STARTING IN 1916 AND UPGRADED TO THE THEN CURRENT CARCANO MAGAZINE.
THESE RIFLES, WHICH WERE CONSIDERED EMERGENCY PRODUCTION FOR WWI WERE CALLED THE MODEL 1870/87/16.
THIS MODEL SAW SERVICE IN WWI WITH SECONDARY UNITS AND THE ARTILLERY. SOME WERE EVEN USED BY ITALIAN COLONIAL TROOPS AS LATE AS WWII, WITH MANY BEING CAPTURED BY THE ALLIES IN NORTH AFRICA.

THE STOCK HAS MATCHING SERIAL NUMBERS WHICH MANY EXAMPLES OF THESE DO NOT.
THE STOCK IS MARKED WITH THE "OFFICIO PROVVISO/D'ARTIGLIERIA/GARDONE V.T." CARTOUCHE AT THE TIME OF ITS CONVERSION TO 6.5MM
